The reader pairs sustained textbook prose with explicit views of arguments, primary sources, people, and intellectual traditions. Each layer is meant to return you to the text with a better question.
Four ways into a chapter
- First Read
- The complete canonical chapter, with the prose given room to work.
- Deep Read
- Arguments, objections, concepts, and judgment points attached to stable passages.
- Sources
- Primary texts, editions, quotations, and rights information used by the chapter.
- World
- Thinkers, traditions, historical settings, and conceptual relationships.
Copies you can keep
Each chapter has a print view designed for paper or the browser's “Save as PDF” option. It also has a self-contained HTML download for offline reading. Both copies retain the chapter's headings, sources, license, and canonical address.
What the site does not do
The first release does not include analytics, student accounts, AI feedback, or persistent peer discussion. Course discussion and submitted work remain in Canvas.
Open licenses, stated precisely
Original textbook prose is licensed under CC BY 4.0. Site software is licensed under the MIT License. Original structured metadata is dedicated under CC0 1.0. Third-party texts, translations, and images retain the rights stated on their individual records.
